SPJ Catholic Curriculum

Kindergarten

Students study:
  • The Sign of the Cross
  • The Lord's Prayer
  • The "Glory be"
  • Hail Mary
  • The Guardian Angel prayer
  • Prayer before meals
  • Students will also develop their relationships with other students using Jesus as a model for how to treat others.  Students in Kindrgarten learn Scriptural stories through the Read & See Bible. The meaning behind feast days and holidays are taught, as well.

First Grade

Students study:
  • The Sign of the Cross
  • The Lord's Prayer
  • The "Glory be"
  • Hail Mary
  • The Guardian Angel prayer
  • Prayer before meals
  • Angel of God prayer
  • Morning Prayer
  • Students in first grade begin to delve more deeply into Scripture, again through the use of Read & See Bible.  Basic concepts of the Catechism are studied throughout the school year.  

Second Grade

Students study:
  • The Lord's Prayer
  • The "Glory be"
  • Hail Mary
  • The Guardian Angel prayer
  • Prayer before meals
  • Angel of God prayer
  • Morning Prayer
  • Birth of Jesus prayer
  • Act of Contrition
  • Students concentrate on the Sacraments of confession and first Eucharist this year, learning the significance behind each before receiving the Sacraments at the end of the year.  Students also learn about the various parts of Mass and the reasons behind each.  Second grade marks the first year that students learn to look up Scriptural passages in the Bible.

Third Grade

Students study:
  • Angel of God Prayer
  • Morning Prayer
  • Birth of Jesus prayer
  • Act of Contrition
  • Ten Commandments
  • Students in third grade study numerous Catholic saints and their contributions to spreading God's Word.  Further study of the parts and practices of Mass is conducted, as are Scriptural study and learning of Catechtical concepts.
  • Concepts mastered: Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, Guardian Angel prayer, Prayer Before Meals, & Glory be to the Father prayer.

Fourth Grade

 

Students study:
  • Angel of God prayer
  • Morning Prayer
  • St, Michael the Archangel Prayer
  • Act of Contrition
  • Ten Commandments
  • Students in fourth grade study and memorize the Ten Commandments.  Additionally, the students study the Beatitudes and learn all seven Sacraments.  Further, more in-depth study of Scripture is conducted in fourth grade.  The students also work with a Jesse Tree.
  • Concepts mastered: Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, Guardian Angel prayer, Prayer Before Meals, & Glory be to the Father prayer.

Fifth Grade

Students study:
  • Apostle's Creed
  • Nicene Creed
  • Act of Contrition
  • Communion of Saints
  • Adoration
  • Gifts / Fruits of the Holy Spirit
  • The Joyful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary
  • Students in fifth grade continue with study of Scripture & the Catechism, while studying the impacts and essence of God's Grace.  Students also learn about Purgatory and learn about God's miracle of incorrupt saints.
  • Concepts mastered: Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, Guardian Angel prayer, Prayer Before Meals, St. Michael the Archangel Prayer, Morning Prayer, & Glory be to the Father prayer.

Sixth Grade

Students study:
  • Apostle's Creed
  • Nicene Creed
  • Communion of Saints
  • Adoration
  • Gifts / Fruits of the Holy Spirit
  • Fatima Prayer
  • The Glorious Mysteries of the Holy Rosary
  • Students in sixth grade continue with study of Scripture, with a focus on Old Testament passages.  Students also learn about the historical context of the Old Testament and the impact of the Old Testament on Jesus's life.  Students take part in intensive projects during Advent & Lent.
  • Concepts mastered: Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, Guardian Angel prayer, Prayer Before Meals, St. Michael the Archangel Prayer, Morning Prayer, Glory be to the Father prayer, & Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary.

Seventh Grade

Students study:
  • Apostle's Creed
  • Nicene Creed
  • Beatitudes
  • Adoration
  • Gifts / Fruits of the Holy Spirit
  • Seven Deadly Sins / Seven Heavenly Virtues
  • The Luminous Mysteries of the Holy Rosary
  • Students in seventh grade continue with study of Scripture, with a focus on New Testament passages.  Students learn how to maximize the service of the self for others.  Students also complete intensive projects on numerous saints and delve deeply into the Stations of the Cross.  
  • Concepts mastered: Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, Guardian Angel prayer, Prayer Before Meals, St. Michael the Archangel Prayer, Morning Prayer, Glory be to the Father prayer, Communion of Saints, Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, Gifts / Fruit of the Holy Spirit, & Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary.

Eighth Grade 

Students study:
  • Apostle's Creed
  • Nicene Creed
  • Beatitudes
  • Adoration
  • Church History (councils, people, & events)
  • Seven Deadly Sins / Seven Heavenly Virtues
  • The Sorrowful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary
  • Preparation for Confirmation
  • Right to Life Movement
  • Students in eighth grade are reaching the culmination of their studies through Confirmation.  Students examine thoughtfully the more nuanced aspects of the faith, while honing skills learned in the earlier grades.  
  • Concepts mastered: Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, Guardian Angel prayer, Prayer Before Meals, St. Michael the Archangel Prayer, Morning Prayer, Glory be to the Father prayer, Communion of Saints, Luminous Mysteries of the Holy Rosary, Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, Gifts / Fruit of the Holy Spirit, & Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary.
